Deposition of Elizabeth Almond, wife of John Almond of Potton: She was sitting at Mrs Gerrill's when Mrs Emery's little boy William called 'Mrs Almond, Mrs Almond, mother's hanging herself'. Mrs Almond found Mrs Emery, wife of James Emery, in the barn with a rope wrapped around her neck. The rope was loose and Mrs Almond put her hand between the rope and Mrs Emery's neck. Mrs Gerrill ran out to get Samuel Dean to cut her down. They brought her out into yard and sat her on a chair where she soon came to herself. Samuel Dean, Labourer of Sutton in Bedofrd was outside the Public House in Potton kept by Mr Burnage. Mrs Gerrill asked if he had a knife. He went to the barn and cut Mrs Emery down. She was carried outside and sat on a chair. The rope was wrapped three times round her neck and secured to a rafter in the barn. The rope was a clothes line. Thomas Vincent, Police Sergeant of Potton received information that Mrs Emery had attempted suicide by hanging herself. Case reported to the Superintendent. James Emery, labourer, was bound over for the sum of £10 as surety for his wife's good behaviour for 6 months and to pay costs.
