Scope and Content
"I bequeth my soull to God Allmeghtie and to all the celistiall Compeny of heven" and burial in churchyard of Dunstable. Wife is to distribute on the day of his burial to poor people "suche Charytable Almes As I have willed hir to make and do betwene hir and me".
To son Robert Burton and to the heirs of his body the house and land called The Saracens Hed in Dunstable, with all houses, lands, gardens, yards and orchards belonging to the same, now in the tenure of George Vause, innholder. To him also the other house belonging to the same lying in the North End of Dunstable now in the tenure of Thomas Jones, both of which houses testator had of the gift and sale of George Acworth esquire and [blank] Butler gentleman, and he leaves also to son Robert Burton the house and land in the Northend of Dunstable which testator and his wife Alys had of the gift of John Fensham of Dunstable, his wife's father, which is now in the tenure of Robert Turner butcher. To son also all other houses and lands in Dunstable from the age of 18 years.
To son Robert also ten pounds of good English money, three silver spoons, a featherbed, a bolster, a coverlet, a pair of good sheets, a pair of blankets, testator's best gown, best doublet and his jacket of camblet.
To his daughter Margaret £20 to be paid her on the day of her marriage, or part to go to her before, when she shall come to a lawful age, with the consent of her mother and testator's friend William Becheham. In addition three silver spoons, and an honest complete bed with all that belongs to it.
If wife should marry again she is to pay before her marriage to testator's faithful friend William Bacheham of Dunstable, all the money and other bequests to the children, which he is to use for the children. Should either child die before marriage, or before entering on their legacy, then the other to be their heir, and should both die then wife Alys and the heirs of her body to inherit.
To his son also a great chaffer of brass. To friend William Becheham a coat cloth coloured [blank] , a hose cloth, a doublet cloth of black fustian being ready bought and lying in testator's house. To William Throppe a jerkin of buff leather and testator's scarlet bonnet.
To sir Richard Bowstred priest 20s.. and testator's second best gown coloured black. To his servant Thomas Adenton the violet coat. To each maid servant 20d.
Residue to wife Alys, and she to be sole executrix "she to orden And disspose for my soull and all Cristen soulles as my very truste is in hir". Testator's loving friend William Bechem yeoman of the King's Guard to be supervisor.
