Title
Draft of Andrew Underwood's history of Ampthill National School with accompanying letter from G.H.Ashman written on the rear of a circular letter from AU about the draft asking for comments, comments include:
- the first Sunday School master he could remember was [Alexander] Pym, all the school masters were also Sunday School masters;
- Miss [Martha] Brightman followed Miss Crick as headmistress of the Girls School c.1883, Miss Dickens may have been an assistant teacher or pupil teacher;
- Herbert Studman was a keen teetotaller and ran a mission in the old Quaker rooms called Boys Own as well as the Band of Hope; he was also a musician of note;
- Charles Searle's housekeeper was a Miss Primmat;
- cucumbers mentioned in the text were probably squirting cucumbers from which a medicine was obtained; remuneration of 5/- a day for a boy cutting the cucumbers the writer regarded as far too high, even 5/- a week being generous;
- Herbert Studman used the old harmonium to give singing lessons
