Letter from C. Mood, manager of the Capital & Counties Bank Limited, Luton Branch to Howard Spensley of Westoning Manor, Ampthill… 'You have doubtless heard the news that the above firm have called a meeting of their creditors for Wednesday next - an investigation into affairs on the death of Mr. J. Browning having resulted in disclosing a deplorable position. I believe the deficiency will amount to £800. The balance sheet furnished me in October, as well as past balance sheets, clearly have been of a fraudulent character. How far Mr. H. Browning is responsible for this I am not prepared to say. It is a matter of wonder to me how the firm could have continued for as long without being seriously pressed by their creditors, if such a thing had happened the position would have been disclosed much earlier. Needless to say had the Bank known the true facts of the case the debt would have been called in long age'.
