Letter from Andrew Underwood to Marilyn L.Nichols Trumbull refuting that Francis Nicolls of Stratford [Connecticut] was Richard Nicols' brother due to confusion "led by unscrupulous researchers in the last century"; - the parish registers show that Francis of Ampthill was baptised in 1620 whereas the Francis of Stratford was born in 1595, 14 years before his parents' marriage; - Francis Nicolls of Ampthill was a Captain, Francis Nicolls of Stratford a Sergeant, two very different ranks suggesting difference of social class; - the Canadian branch of the family supposedly descended from Francis Nicolls of Ampthill had a coat of arms which bore no resemblance to that of the Ampthill family
