Title
[f. 241d] William Stookes of Okeley the elder, made 28 Jan 1546/7, no record of probate, but a date "12 June".
"Furst I bequeth my soull immortall unto the great and infinite marcye of God the Father Allmeghtie, and my body mortall to the grownd to be bered in the Churche of Okeley".
To the high altar for tithes forgotten 6s. 8d.; for his mortuary 10s.; to the upkeep of the church 13s. 4d.; to the bells of the church 6s. 8d.; to Clopham high altar 20d.; to the poor people of Clopham half a quarter of malt and half a quarter of barley to be distributed where John Fetzrichard shall think there is most need. To the high altar of Bromham 20d.; to the poor people of Bromham half a quarter of malt the half a quarter of barley to be distributed where there is most need by the oversight of James Harper otherwise called James Green. To the poor people of Okeley 2 quarter of barley and one quarter of malt to be distributed where there is most need by the discretion of testator's executors.
To William Flecher and Agnes his wife and their heirs all testator's lands in the parish of Felmersham according to a deed of gift previously made to William and Agnes.
To John Rookes and his heirs a close called [?]Mychys with the barn and the land belonging to the same; a house called Rosthis in Okeley; a house called Gales; a house in the Churche Ende now in the occupation of John Burdon with a quarterland; three acres of mead and a half lying in Patenham mede held of the lord of Steventon, all according to a previously made deed of gift to them by the testator.
To William Berre and Alis his wife and their heirs the lands which testator bought of William Techemarche in Clopham and Okeley according to the deed of gift previously made to them by testator.
To Millysent F..r.loo a house and a close sometime called Mores with half an acre of land lying in the parish of Clopham; also a messuage and the lands and meadows that testator bought of William Kent deceased.
To Agnes Flecher the daughter of William Flecher a dwelling house purchased of Henry Bayes lying in Okeley in the Churche Ende with a barn and £6 13s. 4d. to be paid by William Barre on the day of her marriage, and should Agnes die without issue, then the property to remain to William Flecher the younger and his issue, in default to William Flecher his elder brother.
William Barre is to have all those parcels of land and mead which he bought of testator, and which once belonged to Henry Bayes, with certain other land which testator bought of Richard Edward of Okeley.
Jone Butman sometime the wife of Robert Allen shall have the house now in the tenure of John Tilbrocke until the son of Robert Allen comes to the age of 18 years, and then Francis Allen, this son, shall have it to him and to his heirs, and if there is no issue, then it is to go to the next heirs of "tholde blode of the Allinges for ever". A proviso that if Francis Allen comes to the age of 18, and then dies without issue, Jone Butman to have the house for her lifetime, then it is to revert to the Allens.
To Stauford Bridge 5s.
To kinsman William Stookes of [?]Thowere Ende the best shod cart and a horse price 20s. or more. To him also half an acre of wheat with an acre of barley ready sown and to each of his children an ewe sheep, neither of the best or of the worst but indifferent.
To William Coke of Okeley the best shod cart and a cow worth 13s. 4d. and to each of his children a ewe sheep.
To servant Margreat Porter a featherbed with a bolster, a brass pot next the best, a brass pan next the best, a settle next the best, 2 pewter dishes next the best, 2 candlesticks next the best, a table with the feet which stands next the fire in the Hall with the form that belongs to the same, and 2 little stools.
To every godchild 6d. and to every servant a ewe sheep.To John Jones a bullock of a year old and a sheep. He forgives William Scott of Okeley 5s.. To John [?]Harrison of Okeley a bushel of malt and a bushel of barley and to John Gurney the same. To William [?]Cherwod son of Bruggett Stookes a three year old bullock and 2 ewes. To William Stookes his best gown. To William Cooke his best "gawbertyne" gaberdine.
At his burial his executors are to bestow £6 13s. 4d. and for a sermon 2s.. To Davy Jones all such right and interest testator has in an indenture taken of Master Fethgeffray. To William Berre all such title and interest testator has in an indenture taken of the late dissolved house of Harwold, and also the money that remains in the hands of the Lord Wawre, and the half rood of the ground that he has of the Lord Vawce is to remain to William Berre and his heirs.
To William Flecher and to William Berre a holme with the water and all the land, pasture and mead that testator bought of John Stoakes "layte tholme landes water pasture and mede of Richard Edward" paying the £3 that is unpaid for the premises.
To his daughter Agnes Fletcher 6 silver spoons. To Elzabeth Thorogood 3 silver spoons. To every of his children's children £3 6s. 8d.. All his legatees are to allow his estate to receive the rents of his property at the next Michaelmas after his death.
To Agnes Jolys 20s. and testator's sleeved coat. To servant Mergery Porter a cow, a pair of Flaxen sheets made this last year, and a new coverlet lately bought. To his boy Thomas Stoke a weaning calf. To Jane Thody a weaning calf. To Agnes [?]Warnet a weaning calf.
To sir Robert Payne/Payce 20s.
Residue at disposition of executors William Berre and Nicholas Flether, each to have 10s. for their work. Supervisors William Flecher and John Mayger, William to have 10s..
