  • Title
    [f. 196d]John Hill of Sevellshoo in the parish of Flytton, made 9 Oct. pr. 15 Nov. 1546. He makes his present testament and last will beseeching God "that by his grete marcy and grace it may be conformable unto his plesur and will. Furst I bequeth my soull unto AllmeghtieGod my creator and Redemer " . His body to be buried within the parish church of Flytton. To the high altar there for tithes forgotten "if any such be" 12d.. To the mother church of Lincoln 2d.. To Flitton church for his lying there 6s. 8d.. To the high ways between Sevellshoo and Sowthend Brege 6s. 8d. As to his manors, lands, tenements and hereditaments in Mauden, Sevelshoo, Caynoo, Flytton and Overgravenhurst, first he gives to his wife Alys his manor called Ragons and lands in Maldon for the term of her life, and on her death the reversion is to testator's son Edward Hill and his heirs male according to the last will of testator's father Thomas Hill. To Alys also a messuage in Malden late in the tenure of Thomas Cooke together with the land, meads and pastures belong to the same messuage, to hold for the term of her life, with the reversion to testator's son Edward and his heirs and assigns. To son Edward his heirs and assigns for ever the messuage, land, mead and pastures in Malden which testator late bought of Frances Morgan gentleman. To wife Alys one moiety of his manor and land in Wotton until testator's son William shall reach the age of 21, when William is to have the moiety, charged with the annual payment to Alys for her life time of 13s. 4d.. Alys is to have also the other moiety of the said manor and land in Wotton until testator's son Thomas shall come to the age of 21, when he is to enter into the same moiety to hold to himself and his heirs, paying yearly to Alys for her life time 13s. 4d.. To his wife Alys the messuage, land, mead and pasture in Overgravenhurst where Thomas Elmer now lives, and all of which is now in the tenure of John Millward or his assigns, which Alys is to have until testator's son Edmund reaches the age of 21, and all other lands and properties to descend to son Edmund at the age of 21. To his wife Alys his messuage with the appurtenances in Caynoo where testator now lives with the lands and pastures belonging to it in the parish of Flytton for her lifetime while she remains unmarried, but should she remarry then the property to go to his son George Hill when he comes to the age of 21. Should it happen that wife Alys die before the sons come to the age of 21 they shall enter into their properties immediately. Should any of his sons William, Thomas, Edmund and George die unmarried under the age of 21 thus having no issue or heir, the properties bequeathed to such son are to pass to his surviving brothers. To wife Alys the properties testator has on lease from the Master of the House of St. Johns in Bedford for the remainder of their respective terms, for as long as she lives and remains unmarried, but if she remarry then the property for the remainder of the lease is to go to son George at the age of 21. To son George and to son Edward £5 each. To son Edmund at age of 21 £20. To son Thomas at age of 21 £5. To his daughter Jane £20 on the day of her marriage. Property left to any child who dies before receiving it to be divided between survivors. To parish church of Flitton 6s. 8d.; to Maldon church 3s. 4d.; to Sevellyshoo chapel 4d.; to Wooton church 3s. 4d.. Residue to wife Alys towards the nourishing and virtuous bringing up of his children, and she to be sole executrix, and for supervisors John Colbeckes and Edward Gostwike gentlemen.
