Notes by Andrew Underwood "How H.King & Son began. Harry King (aged 76) told me this, 23 Oct 1973. Hugh King (Harry's father) worked at the Brewery as a plumber. One day he was asked by the brewers whether he would consider taking a pub. After discussing with his wife, he agreed, and was offered The Compasses in Dunstable Street. But later, before the tenancy was finalised, a snag was discovered in that an employee of the brewery could not legally also be a tenant. Mr.Tanqueray, legal adviser to the Brewery, suggested that problem could be solved if Hugh King resigned from his job at the brewery, took The Compasses, and set up as a plumber in his own right. The Brewery agreed that he should continue to do their work as before, but instead of receiving a wage, he should submit a bill!"
