    Counterpart agreement between the Rev. Bridges Harvey, clerk, James Brewster, esq., John Sewell, John Vaizey, Isaac Sewell, Thomas Smoothy, John Greenwood and Isaac Sewell the younger, gent, (trustees of the charity of William Martin, deceased) of the first part and Samuel Courtauld, Peter Alfred Taylor, Andrew Taylor and George Courtauld of Halsted (Essex), silk manufacturers, of the other part whereby Rev. BH etc for £10 agree with SC etc to permit SC etc their heirs etc to hold and occupy (upon certain terms and conditions - see below): (a) piece or parcel of ground containing 16 ft. in length and 10 ft in width situated upon the N.E. side of a meadow belonging to Rev BH etc and adjoining to Townford Mill (see recitals below). Terms and conditions: - to convert (a) into a public road or way for horses, carts, carriages and foot passengers to be used instead of the accustomed way or path through the yard and premises. - to erect a bank by the side of the road and plant whitethorn and quickthorn as a stand-to hedge or fence to be cut annually and not allowed to grow more than 6' above the level of the road. - to place a gate at the W. end of the hedge, so as to leave a passage for carts and carriages through the same into the adjoining meadow and land, and a clasp gate for convenience of foot passengers. - to keep the road and footpath and quick-fence or hedge, and gates in good repair. - to make a drain underground to carry off water and soil from the road and footpath and the stable and premises of SC etc, the drain to be kept free from obstruction. 25 Mar. 1829 (wmk. 1825 J. Rump) Recites that there appears to have been from time immemorial a public way or passage from the street or lane called the Causeway in Halsted by and through the yard and premises called Townford Mill belonging to SC etc and to their great annoyance; and that to divert the Causeway SC etc have applied to and requested Rev BH etc, feoffees of the adjoining land, to permit them to remove it from their premises and to form instead a passage on a piece of land running parallel with the boundary of the yard and premises of SC etc and separated therefrom by a brick wall lately erected by them.
