Letter from Matilda E.Clarke of 3 Alma Street, Edinburgh [Scotland] to Frederic Thomas Tanqueray: "When Mr.Coleman called on me on Saturday I requested him to ascertain & let me hear what length of notice the present tenants (each respectively, if there is any difference in their tenure) hold their Houses and Cottages, but our interview was a very hurried & short one as I was just leaving home & he may have forgotten it or have mislaid my address. I also ought to have re'd from him the respective names and rents of each of the tenants at the present time, as on looking over the details supplied at Woburn when I called then, I find that they referred to tenancies then existing but many years ago. As regards the 3 Houses in one block "Kendal, Smith & Potts" - are they under any condition to keep up themselves their necessary repairs? There was once an entry of £1 rental for a Chapel. That has certainly been discontinued for the last 10 or 12 years. As I heard that the agent in charge of the Houses &c. is living in Woburn it will probably save 2 or 3 days delay, if you can forward to me the above particulars or the part of the family for which Mr.Coleman acts, instead of my writing to Luton for them. You no doubt have been informed that I hold the refusal or acceptance for a short definite time. With thanks for your kind assistance. It will not be necessary to mention my name at present, as of course the brewery have a right to ask for and receive from their Agent the above mentioned full & clear particulars as from his personal knowledge. I have been much tired with the long journey - but as we shall be at this address till Tuesday evening I shall hope to hear from you by that time or it must be forwarded on from here"
