Several mentions of going to fairs and trying out and buying horses. Includes: - 22 March My poor Father died this morning 1/4 to 9 o'clock. He was seized yesterday about 1/4 past 1 o'clock in the Pony chaise and never spoke or was conscious afterwards. Fine day. cold wind - 27 March My poor Father was buried this afternoon at Millbrook about 3 o'clock. Ben, Sam, Ted, Uncle Ben, Messrs Furze, W Seabrook, F Seebohm, J T Green, Collingwood, J Morris, Wynter & Collier followed. Mr Maule performed the service. Blustery wind. - 23 April Went to Mr Lylecotes in the morning to see about the restoration of Marston Church - 4 May Went with Mr Jepson to Chesterfield fair Dined with Uncle Ben at Mr Wood's Spirit Merchant and returned with Mr J. The mare bolted just before entering Baslow Village and upset us at the Bridge. Mr J a good deal hurt about the head Mare continued to Chatsworth and broke the carriage all to pieces against the yard gates - 9 May This day insured against accidents of every description for amt £1000 - 17 May Home all day not being very well. Vaccinated this morning, showery, partial eclipse of the sun at 5.42pm - 19 May was elected surveyor of Turnpike road - 24 May was again vaccinated -25 May went to Cambridge to Drill with several Battalions on Stourbridge Common. Back by last train. Fine day for a wonder. - 8 June ...to company drill in the evening - 24 June left Marston by special train with No 5 Co to go to Oxford Marched past and had a sham fight Major Genl R Rumley. Left Oxford by 10.15 and arrived home at 1 am - 26 June went bathing this morning in reservoir.
