  • Title
    Folio 148 John Thodye of Colmorth, ploughwright, made 11 June (the Saturday in Whitsun week and the eve of Holy Trinity) 1541, proved 20 Oct. 1542. The text recites the title of Henry VIII including "on erth supreme hede of the church of yngland" and testator leaves his soul "unto Almeightie God my Redemer besecheng our blessed lady sainct Mary and all the holy sanctes in Heven to bemeane for me to the holy trinitie that my Soull may be partetaker of the blesse everlasteing". His mortuary is to be paid according to the custom and law of the church. Burial in the church yard of St. Denys in Colmorth. To the bells 12d.; to the high altar for tithes forgotten 8d.; To the Sepulchre light [12d. deleted] a pound of wax. Residue to his wife Jone, executrix, but if she marry again then his other executor John Newman, son of Richard Newman, shall give her of the goods what he thinks best, and the remainder of the goods are then to be sold and the money arising used for the souls of testator and his friends. If his wife die still a widow, then John Newman is to sell the goods and use the money for souls. If the testator's son "have any wyt and Reason as I pray Jesu he may" then he is to have the goods on the death of testator's wife. Robert Hill senior of Stapelow to be Overseer and to have 3s. 8d.. John Newman to have 3s. 8d.. Witnesses Richard Newman, Geffray Sexten, John Norfildes and Thomas Bonefild.
