  • Title
    Folio 145d Richard Newman, made 20 May 1542, proved 12 Oct. 1542. His soul to Almighty God and the holy company of Heaven. Burial in the church yard of Colmorth. His executors are to be John Newman his natural son, and John Newman his son-in-law. To John (his natural son) his house and lands and profits, and a close lying in Eton Sowcon called Rogers Stockeing for life, provided he keeps the properties in repair, and finds testator's wife Joane Newman (son's natural mother) an honest living for her lifetime, or else wife is to have the house and land for her lifetime. After the deaths of testator's wife and son John, the properties are to go to son John's eldest living son begotten of son's wife Margret Newman, and this eldest son is to give to his brother William Newman begotten by son John on his first wife £7 within a year, otherwise William is to have the properties for ever, charged with the payment of £7 to his brother. Should all of son John's sons die without issue, then the property is to go to testator's daughter Anne Newman and to her children. To dau. Anne 20s. and to her children 20s., that is 6s. 8d. each. To the bells 6d.; to the high altar 2d.. Son John is to have a trental of masses said for the soul of the testator, and he is to keep a "year tyde" annually for the souls of testator and his friends, as he has been accustomed. To Nicholas Newman a great brass pot. To Katering another brass pot; to Agnes Cowper 12d.. Supervisor John Denys, to have 20d.. Witnesses Richard More senior, Henry Jude, Nicolas Decons, William Bulward and William Cowper.
