- TitleNotice of bankruptcy relating to George Martin Whitman of Aspley Guise, Beds, house agent and tailor in the county court of Bedfordshire holden at Luton. Includes details of the summary case including: - Summary of the debtors statement of affairs, liabilities vs. assets. - Causes of failure as stated by the debtor: 'Illness of self and bad trade through competition' including a filed deficiency case. - Observations on the case made by Alfred Ewen, official receiver, The parade, Northampton: 'The debtor (age 57) states that he has always resided at 3 Salford Road, Aspley Guise. The house formerly belonged to his father, and on the debtors marriage in April 1906, it was settled on him for life with remainder in favour of this wife. The property was mortgaged at the date of this settlement. The business carried on by the debtor had previously belonged to his father who died in May 1909. The debtor prior to his death assisted him, and the liabilities attaching to the business on the death of his father, subsequently paid by the debtor amounted to about £150, while the debtor received under his fathers will the sum of £149. The debtor has never had any capitol of his own, but he states that his wife has lent him money from time to time to the extent of £500, which amount is now owing, and also has guaranteed the £112 due to the bankers. The £500 advanced by the wife is included in the above statement of affairs. I requested the debtor to furnish a more detailed account as regards the deficiency, but he states he is unable to do so. There seems little doubt that the income from the business has not been sufficient to meet the expenses for some years past, and that the debtors wife has been assisting him from time to time, especially as regards finding the necessary money to pay for the rents collected by the debtor as house agent. He states that he received the rents, paid the money into the bank, and drew on it'... 'The principal unsecured creditors are as follows: - one creditor for £112, overdraft at bank; three creditors for rent collected by the debtor as agent, £86; eight creditors in respect of debts incurred in the tailoring business, £91/9/10; two creditors for professional services (medical and legal), £35/3/-; and the balance of liabilities is in respect of personal accounts and the House agency business.
