Notes for counsel drawn up by Andrew HawkinsTanqueray relating to a temporary refusal to renew a license to Mary Hilton, victualler of the Sun Inn, Felmersham. The case to be heard before the Court House, Sharnbrook (Sharnbrook Petty Sessional Division of Bedfordshire) on 7th Mar 1913. Includes notes on the case and evidence that was later used on 7th Mar 1813 (See brief for owner and licensee at HN10/368/Sun6) including: - Notes on the owners and tenants of the other three fully licensed houses in Felmersham and one in the neighbouring hamlet of Radwell. Including the Sun Inn, Owners: Morris & Co. (Ampthill) Ltd; Tenant: Mrs Mary Hilton; Six Ringers, Owners: Jarvis & Co, Bedford; Tenant: Frank Desborough of 8 years (the above being the two licenses put back at Brewster Session); Plough, Owners: Newland & Nash, Bedford; Tenant H. Paulger of three years; Swan, Owners: Jarvis & Co.; Tenant: H. Bowyer. (This house has recently changed hands.) - Notes on the accommodation at the Sun Inn (See HN10/368/Sun3), the present tenant, the Water Lily Lodge Benefit Society, Mr. Harry Hilton Green, the local Cricket Club, the Ram Sale and possible character witnesses for Mrs Hilton including Thomas James Goodman. - Notes on potential evidence to use at the hearing ' Mrs Hilton tells me that after her licence was put back at the Brewster Sessions, she called at the Swan at Sharnbrook and there met H. Paulger, the landlord of the Plough, Felmersham who in the presence of others boasted that his was the only licence in Felmersham that has been renewed as he had discussed the matter with Mr. Stileman Gibbard (Chairman of the Bench) prior to the Brewster Sessions. If this statement is true it certainly effects on the impartiality of the Chairman of the Bench. I am further informed that the landlord of the Plough has twice been in trouble about his licence. I this is true, surely the license of the plough should have been adjourned 'To sum up - Mrs Hilton is very popular in the village and neighbourhood and there will be no difficulty in getting any number of witnesses to come forward'.
