- TitleLetter from John Thomas Green at Berrystead, Woburn to Misses Goodman at Sherington [Buckinghamshire]: - "I understood by your note of the 19 Sep that Mr.Knapp had agreed to take the Roots - which implied that he would take them at a Valuation in the usual way - which is the simple and fair course for a caring Occupier - not for him to accept or refuse as he pleases afterwards. Not knowing the number of Acres of the Roots (I observe that you said the Mangots are exceptionally good) or the probable Value I am rather at a loss what to say. If the probable value be say 50 or thereabout then perhaps it may be as well to offer them to Mr.Knapp at a Price named by one of the gentlemen mentioned in your note - but if the supposed Value much exceed 50, I should say offer them by auction unless Mr.Knapp agrees to take them by Valuation. My Idea of the time for a Sale of the bulk of the Property on the Farm, is that it should be about the end of this month or quite early in the next. It will give time for dealing afterwards with anything which it may be prudent to buy in rather than sell at great disadvantage, and besides it seems to men that the longer you carry on the Farm - feeding cattle in the Yard - insuring them &c. the more you are doing for the succeeding Occupier & to your own loss. It is not to be as if you were going to continue the Occupation. I am sensible that the Advice I have before offered and perhaps what I am saying now is influenced in some measure by my desire to get you relieved as soon as can well be from care and anxiety. How will it be if you were to have some conversation with Mr.Swaffield - hear his opinion as to the best course to take respecting the sale of the Roots and the general sale. He understands these matters both as a practical Farmer & as an Auctioneer the probable favourable or unfavourable Times for a sale &c & the current prices. If you should like he will of course wait upon you as part of his ordinary duty in respect of arranging for the sale and I will if you please make the appointment for you. I am glad to hear your Cattle have not been affected. I hope they will not be. All my Milk Cows have been [sic] the disease but slightly only"
