Letter from George Jones at Oakham House, Dudley [Staffordshire] to John Britten: - "As arranged I have worked over the piece of land belonging to you in Mr.Arnold's field up to the acre mentioned in the agreement dated Nov 26 - 84 [see HN10/276/Britten1] between us for the Ironstone & also put down holes in the acre, all which trials prove that there is no workable stone in the acre, consequently I do not wish to go on any further. I trust therefore as I have bought & you have sold that, that does not exist you will cancel the agreement & return me the 50 less the stone I have loaded up at 4/- per ton from Messrs Chances field. I have levelled the land in Mr.Arnold's & left you in a better position than when I commenced"
