- TitleCutting from Luton News regarding reconstitution of J.W.Green Limited and application for stock issue following resignation of Lt.Col.Harold Philip Green of his controlling interest, selling to Tom Selwyn Jones, Stephen Townsend Pike and Stephen Jefferson Gordon who sold on to Erlangers Limited; matters mentioned include: - establishment of Phoenix Brewery by R. & F.Pearman in Park Street West in 1857; - John William Green joining Pearmans in 1863, two years after leaving school; - purchase of Pearmans by J.W.Green in 1869; - acquisition of Wadsworth & Thaire brewery in Market Hill in1875; - purchase of Thomas Sworder & Company's brewery in 1897 (on site in 1935 owned by Hugh Cumberland Limited and successor to Old Brewery in Park Street, in existance from about 1760 and owned for many years by Burr family, the site in occupation of George Carruthers Limited in 1939), J.W.Green thereby became the only brewer in Luton; - take over of Glover & Sons of Harpenden [Hertfordshire] in 1919 (with 14 public houses, 5 beerhouses and 2 off licences); - absorbtion of W.& S.Lucas of Hitchin [Hertfordshire] in 1923; - acquiisition of Morris & Company (Ampthill) Limited in 1926; - rebuilding and enlarging of Park Street West brewery; - mineral water manufacture carried on since acquisition of Sworder's; - original directors were J.W.Green, Lt.Col.Sidney J.Green, Col.C.N.Kidd and Lt.Col.H.P.Green, Walter William Merchant later replacing C.N.Kidd; - deaths of Sidney Green in 1930 and J.W.Green, aged 85, in 1932; - addition of Percival William Hensman Lovell and John Bentley Sidney Tabor as directors; - company in 1939 held 239 licensed properties in Bedfordshire, Buckinghamshire and Hertfordshire with wine & spirits stores in Castle Street and malthouse in Langley Street; - company properties valued in 1939 at 1,152,300; - hopes in 1939 to built hotel in Kingsway, Luton (at fifth attempt)
