JUDICIAL BUSINESS: Recognizances.
"To the keeper of his Majesties gaol for the county of Bedford at the town of Bedford. I send you herewith John Church who was this day brought before me and charged with the begetting a bastard child on the body of Mary Hancock of Pertenhall in the aforesaid county, single woman, which child is now chargeable to the parish of Pertenhall aforesaid...that he has had carnal knowledge of the body of the aforesaid Mary Hancock, and being required by me to finde security for his appearance at the next General Quarter Sessions of the year to be held for the aforesaid county, does refuse or neglect to do so. Therefore in his Majesties name to command you to... the aforesaid John Church into your aforesaid gaol and him therein safely keep until he shall... be delivered by order of law. Given under by hand and seal this twelfth day of January anno domini 1716."
