  • Title
    Settlement examination: James Walker - born at Gamlingay, Camb, where his parents belong. Is between 22-23 years of age. Hired 7 years ago by Mr. James Payne of Gamlingay to be his servant for one year, during a part of which he was at home about 3 weeks on account of illness during which time he procured a substitute and paid him. Returned to his place after recovery, stayed the year, and received his whole wages. At home the next year. Then went and lived two years with Mr. Payne of Gamlingay, and left him at Michaelmas 1819. At St.Neots Statute a short time before Michaelmas 1819 he was hired by Mr. William Wiles of Colmworth for a year for 6 guineas, and went into service two or three days after Michaelmas. Was ill in the course of the winter and by master's permission went home for about a month. He then returned and stayed out the year when his Master paid him his wages, stopping six shillings for the time he was absent during his illness. Signs with his mark.
