Mary Spencer, widow of George Spencer, late of Temple Normanton, Chesterfield, Derbys., labourer, decd. and 3 children, George Henry Geary, illegitimate child before her marriage, 8, William John, 5, Herbert, 1. Hawnes to Chesterfield, Derbys. (ro: 2 copies) 15 Mar 1866 Mary Spencer: Husband George died 12 mths. last Nov. at Hawnes and was buried there. Family living at Hawnes 3 years before his death, Married to him 6 years last harvest at Matlock Independent Chapel, Derbys. Had a child before my marriage, George Henry Geary; my maiden name was geary. Had 2 children by my husband; William John, 5, and Herbert, 1, born after husband's death. Came to Hawnes from Alfreton, Derbys. where we had been a little more than one and half years. After marriage, remained in lodgings at Matlock for about 2mths., then to Atherstone, Warwicks about 12 mths, then to Alfreton where lodged for 1s 8d a week, then to hawnes for 5mths. Returned to Alfreton for 8mths., then back to Hawnes. Husband born at Temple Normanton, Chesterfield, Derbys. 29 when he died. Known him about three years before marriage. Always a labourer; never gained a settlement in his own right. He recd. relief about 3 mths. before his death. Since marriage i have not lived 3 years in any place. John Bensey Coller: residing at Ampthill, living upon my means. Knew George Spencer for 12 years. His father John Specer was a miller at Temple Normanton, where he resided 4-5 years. Believe that George Spencer was born at Normanton. John Spencer rented a large mill at about 20pa. I did business with him for several years, cannot say if he paid any poor rates Thomas Henry Lane: Relieving Officer, Ampthill Union. Mary Spencer and children chargeable to Hawnes since 29 Dec last and for 12mths. before chargeable to the Common Fund of the Union. Not in the workhouse and are receiving outdoor relief.
