Received letters from Mr & Mrs MOTTMAN who were on the eve of starting for America. Writes of wages and conditions and the hope that more moneyed men would remain. Had hired a Richard LONG. No scarcity of labourers, except free man; nearly all are, or have been, prisoners. Goes on to say "what free settler would not, if he could, prevent the incalculable evil resulting from his children's unavoidable and constant intercourse with his prisoner servants"? Discusses problems of free and convict labour. "Harvest poor, due to very dry season, stock prices down", had hoped to be free of every financial claim by now. Last paid sermon preached in April, but direct as formerly "Catachist" as another BIGGS/BRIGGS had come into the district. July 15th, yours of Feb 23rd "our venerable and beloved Father having fully accomplished the number of his days, should be released from the burden of mortality and called to that rest which remaineth for the people of god" Message to his mother. "As your time here must be short, I take this(probably the last)opportunity of once more saying to my dear Mother, "goodbye. God bless you........."
