Deposition:Mary Greene, Husborn Crawley, spinster. Saw Jn.Joanes in her father's shop at Woburn. Ellianor Lawson, Woburn, widow. Jn.Joanes tried to steal ribbon in her shop. John Joanes. He obtained the material in exchange for lace. The Informacon of Mary Greene of Husborne Crawley aforesaid spinster taken upon oath the 17th day of March Anno dni 1683 before St John Thomson Esqr one of his Majesties Justices of the peace for the said County This Informant saith that she did see John Joanes in her fathers shop at Woburne leaning upon his stuffes, and stareing upon her, presently her father bid her look for some thinges, but what she hath forgott, and in the meanetime hee went out of the shop, and she saw him noe more there, and further saith not Mary Greene The Informacon of Ellianor Lawson of Woburne aforesaid widow, taken upon oath the day & yeare aforesaid before St John Thomson Esqr one of his Majesties Justices of the peace for the said County This informant saith that the said John Joanes was in her shop, and cheapned red ribbins, and went away, and came againe, and asked for some of the same red ribbins, which she shewed him, and after he had seene them, hee tooke a peece of ribbin in his hand, with an intent as she conceived to carry it away, and then this informant tooke him by the hand, and hee dropt it, and further saith not Ellianor Lawson "Cheapen" means "ask the price of"
