Whole back covered with message from father to his son [N W Powell, see X291/506/22]. Message reads: 'Leagrave Omnia[?] Works Sunday. My darling little Boy. Having nothing to do, I thought I would write and hear how those chilblains are going on, also your cough and cold, I hope and trust my old man, they are all better, am glad to say my ears are. How do you like this weather, I shall be glad when it goes away but its snowing now and everywhere is all white, the frost was very sharp this morning. I saw a soldier yesterday who came from Tring, he told me that they had not had a wash or any tea for three days, as all the pipes were frozen, and they could not get a drop of water. I was at work all yesterday, or from 9am to 1 pm then from 2 to 5.30 pm another of our men named Shringfield helped me, the foreman wanted a lot of bags of brass emptied so we emptied 364 bags or 3640 topes of shells altogether we have emptied about 12000, so yesterday my wages came to 4/4 ½, a nice little days work, he wants me to go again tomorrow (Monday) and Tuesday. I shall not be able to get there before 11 Am on Monday, but we can work as late as we like, as its all linked up. Well my old man have you caught those rats and mice yet, and have you chopped up all the firewood, and what have you made with the wood I sent you. I have just had my dinner, a nice Pork Chop, which I cooked to a 'T' also three very large potatoes, the latter are 'big uns' about this part. I had a long letter this morning from Cousin Charles Abram[?]. Now old man, with heaps and heaps of love, ships trains, moters etc full of kisses from your loving Dad.'
