  • Title
    Rose, wife of Ric.Freeborne, Keeper of County Gaol, Bedford. The night her husband was away at Ampthill for the sessions, Jn. Holtham told her Latimore and Randall planned to escape by means of tools procured from Ric.Butler. The Informacon of Rose Freeborne wife of Richard Freeborne Keeper of his Majesties Gaole for the County aforesaid taken upon her oath the ninteenth day of January 1683 before me Thomas Christie Esqr one of his Majesties Justices of the peace for the County aforesaid This Informant saith that upon Wednesday night last being the sixteenth of this Instant January this Informants Husband being gon to the Sessions at Ampthill this Informant was willing to sit up to be the more watchfull of the prisoners in her husbands custody & about 3 of the clock in the morning one John Holtham a prisoner there upon Suspicon of Robery tould this Informant that James Latymore & Thomas Randall his fellow prisoners upon the same account intended that night to make their escape and in order thereunto that the said Latymore had tools and instruments about him for the cutting of his fetters which the said Latymore denyed but upon search this informant found in his hand a chizill a punch & a boulster which he had then newly taken out of his pocket which this informant hath since been tould was delivered unto him by one Richard Butler for that purpose Tho Christie [Note in a different hand] Rose Freborne [The] said Holtham's name is Gifford
