The table notes:
- the parish making the return;
- whether both males and females are recorded;
- whether full names are generally given or just surname and initial;
- whether the rank of each individual is given;
- whether the unit of each individual is given (a yes+ meaning that at least some entries include the Battalion number of the Regiment, Field Company number of Royal Engineers unit etc.);
- whether individuals earning significant medals (usually Military Medal or above) are noted;
- whether a Section 1 (those dying on active service) is completed separately;
- whether a Section 2 (those serving abroad and surviving) is completed separately;
- whether a Section 3 (those serving at home) as completed separately;
- whether the return consists of a Section 1 and a section combining 2 and 3;
- whether the return simply lists all individuals without grouping them into sections (often marking the dead with a cross against the name);
- notes on special attributes of the list in question together with a note of the number of dead recorded).
