    Deposition:Humphrey Skelton, Bedford, baker and innholder. 18 Jan. 1682. His horse, and Clem. Austen's saddle were stolen by night. Found Jos.Hewes had sold the saddle to Jn. Turner and exchanged the horse with Jos.Cuthbert. The Informacon of Humphrey Skelton of the said Towne Baker & Inholder taken before me Tho Christie Esqr one of his Majesties of the Peace there the 18th day of January Ao dni 1681 This Informt saith That about Aprill last past he lost a Grey horse out of his Stable, which he deemed to be stollen from him in the night, for that in the morning he found his yard scattered with straw, from the stable doore to the Streete, that the treading of the horse (as he beleived) might not be heard, & at the same time one Clement Austen of Oundle in the County of Northton, who was then this Informts guest, lost his sadle (as he affirmed) out of this Informts howse, And he this Informt being told by some of his Neighbours, that one Joseph Hewes (who is now a prisoner in Northton Gaole) might instly be suspected, as having beene lately at Peterburgh, where he had sold a Mare & Sadle to one John Turner paynter there This Informt thereupon went to Peterburgh, & found the said Austen's Sadle in the said Turner's hands, who told this Informt that he had bought the Mare & Sadle of the said Joseph Hughes & that the said Hewes had exchanged a horse for the said Mare with one of Wisbich, whereupon this Informt went immediately from thence to Wisbich to inquire after his horse & there found the horse that had beene stollen from him in the hands of one Joseph Cuthbert plumber there, who affirmed to this Informt that he had received the said Horse of the said Joseph Hewes in exchange for a Mare.
