  • Title
    John Chandler, Bedford, baker. Charged H.C. with theft of horse : H.C. said it was at Redborne, and he would send for it at his own expense if owner 'would not trouble him'. The Information of John Chandler of the towne of Bedford Baker taken upon oath the 5th day of May before me Tho Hillersden Esqr one of his Majesties Justices of the peace for the county of Bedford. This informant saith that on the 3d of May [several words deleted] he coming from Wm Holstacks of Elstow with a flagon of beare, as he came out of the yard hee mett three men who asked him where the constable was, for they had a man there to give him charge of whom they suspected for stealing of a horse, who then answered, looking upon Hen Clifton alias Clips, hat hee knew him, which made the sd Hen Clifton alias Clips somthing concerned saing doth hee know me, which the other two men taking notice of, came to the sd informant and told him that hee could gett more out of him that they could; and if the sd informant would try, they would give him halfe a dozen of beare, who having had instructions went to the sd Hen Clifton and told him that hee had stole the horse and hee had better confesse where hee was, that the owner might have him again, and then hee would not trouble him, who after a little pause, the sd Hen Clifton, told this informant, that hee had the horse, and that hee was at Redborne, and that if the owner would not trouble him, hee would be at the chardge of sending for him from whom the owner thought good and that if his money, which was but five shillings, would not pay the chardge, hee would work out the overplus and farther this informant saith not.
