    'Life at Oakley in the Nineties' (and covering the period up to 1918) written by Mr E F Newell [Beds Times 21 August 1942 page 8]. (Edward Furnivall Newell was born in 1868 at Milton Ernest, and educated at Bedford Modern School. His great grandfather was a Sergeant Major in the Beds Militia and he himself was maternal grandfather of the donor, Mr W S Knight. In 1892 he became Oakley village correspondent for the Bedfordshire Times. For a picture of him see the Bedfordshire Magazine, vol VI page 136 - photograph of Oakley cricket team. Mr Newell is 4th from the left in the 2nd row. The articles were written in 1942 to commemorate Mr Newell's 50 years as correspondent.)
