Date free text

Production date
From: 1962 To: 1966
Scope and Content
General correspondence:
The school requires an additional 5 acres of land for playing fields to bring it up to standard.
Possible site identified on O.S. sheet XXXII -2 plot No. 6, owned by Associated Portland Cement Manufacturers Ltd. Terracing of the land would be required. Dog Kennel Path could provide pedestrial access via a footbridge, but there is no access for vehicles or machinery.
Associated Portland Cement do not wish to sell the land, but might grant a lease of an area of 300ft x 200ft; unable to provide any access. Condition that the company could retake the land or part if required for company business. Decided that the size and access difficulties made this site impractical.
Owners of land adjoining the existing playing field do not wish to sell and land.
A site adjoining Grove House Garden, to the east of Dog Kennel Path has a pavilion and two football pitches. It is owned by owned by Dunstable Corporation.
A site of about 13 acres off Tottenhoe Road could be used as a campus to bring the playing field requirements up to standard for Dunstable Grammar School, Queen Eleanor's School and Kingsbury School. This site is owned by W R Gibbard. Its use as playing fields would constitute a major departure from the town map, as it is designated white land.
Correspondence mentioning another potential site off French Avenue, and an existing sports ground of 3.976 acres in Downs Road, owned by Cross Paperware Limited. (Cumberland Paper Company)
Decision to proceed with the purchase of the Downs Road land.
Correspondence relating to the nursery adjoining the existing Ashton Grammer School playing fields. The site, of nearly 4 acres, is zoned for residential development, and being offered for sale. Wimpey homes have prepared a development scheme, but to get access would need to acquire a triangular area of the existing playing field (plan included). The County Council considered purching the land for playing fields, but the idea was rejected.
Comments about the Downs Road land being affected by future road proposals.
Consent to take possession of the Downs Road land on 21 June 1965; the purchase was completed on 12 November.
Includes Ordnance Survey plans on which are marked the Portland Cement land, the land owned by Dunstable Corporation and the land off Downs Road. Plans of land owned by W R Gibbard.
