    Deposition: Thomas Newman, St. Neots, draper. 9 November 1675. Had several parcels of material stolen from his shop. Suspects Mary, wife of William Smithes, whose son's shop is next door. Some stuff was found at their house. The information of Thomas Newman of St Neots in the county of Hunts draper taken upon oath before Gaius Squier Esqr one of his Maiesties Justices of peace in the county of Bedd the ninth day of Novemb 1675 This informt saith that within this yeare last past he hath lost severall parcells of stuffes woollen cloth and divers sorts of linnen taken out of his shop at St Neots at sundry times, and about a month agoe he had notice that William Smithes of Bedford inholder had profered to sell some stuffes, whereupon this informt went to Bedford and made search in the house of the said Smithes, and there found pieces of stuffe hid under a bed and one piece of stuff in Smithes own hands, and on Saturday last he found two remnants of searge hid in a haymow there, And this informt hath in suspition Mary Smithes the wife of the said William, for she comeing often to St Neots to her sons house and abideing there sometimes a day and a night (this informants shop and her sons shop adjoyning together) she might (as this informt conceives) convey away a good part of his goods lost as aforesaid.
