  • Title
    Deposition: John Barry, Stoneley, yeoman 1672 Pursued his servant John Langshar after finding horse missing. Found .J.L. and horse apprehended at Biggleswade. Believes J.L., while drunk, intended to steal it. The information of John Barry of Stonely, Hunts. yeoman taken the 23th Dec. 1671. This informant saith that on the 26th day of this inst. Dec. he and some of his family was playing at cards when his boy came and told him that there was a horse missing and came out of the stable of a reddish bay colour with a black maine and a black taile, with noe other considerable markes about him, and thereupon this informant went to Kimbolton to one Mr Cockes at the signe of the White Lyon there, in order to the issueing forth of Hue and cryes and gave him an account of the colour of the horse and the description of one John Langshare his late hired servant who then was missing from his family supposing he was gone away with the horse to St. Neots in Hunts. (where he heard the sd. John Langshare had bin before he came into his service) upon his pleasure conceiving him either to be drunk or almost drunk haveing been drinking at Stonely & Kimbolton all that day and thereupon the sd. Cockes did issue forth hue and cryes accordingly; but doth not remember that he this informant did give any instructions for those hue and cryes to pursue the sd. John Langsharre as one that had stolen his horse and this inf. further saith that he this inf. pursued the sd. John Langshar to St. Neots aforesd. and to Yilling [Yelling] upon the borders of Cambs. being informed by a stranger upon the road that he met such a person goeing to Yelling aforesd, and not hearing of him there returned to his house where he heard that his man and his horse was at Bigleswade in Beds. staid there by the Constables & others of the parish whereupon he came to Bigleswade aforesd the day and month aforesd and found his sd. man and horse there accordingly and doth further say upon his oath that he doth think that the sd. John Langshar took his sd. horse with an intent to steal him but onely in the drunken humour for his pleasure. And further this inf. saith not.
