Luke Lewis. Hemel Hempstead. Mealman. 9 March 1671. 1671 11 guineas and 50s. in silver were stolen from his person. Caused J.Hopson, Rich.Ashton and Dan.Roberte to be arrested as suspected persons. The information of Luke Lewis of Hemmelde Herapsted, Herts., Mealeman taken before the same JPs on the same day. This inf. sayeth, that he being yesterday at Dunstable fayre in this county of Bedford, he had secretly privately feloniously taken from his person eleaven peeces of Gold commonly called Gynneys, and about fifty shillings in silver, And meeting with one ( ) Whittingstall who lived at Hitchin in Herts, he did tell this inf. that there three suspitious persons in the fayre who had been the day before at Hitchin which person the sd. Whitingstall did find in the fayre, and did shew them to this inf. who caused them to be apprehended upon suspition of takeing away his sd, moneys; who declared their names to be as followeth viz. Jas Hopson of Resby in the county of Leicester, Richard Ashton of Welsbourne, Warcs., and Daniel Roberts of Leeds Yorkshire. And further this inf. deposeth not.
