    Deposition: John Fox of Naseby. 1 May 1670. His journey from London to Buckhill, Beds. in company with Mr. Hongerford and Mr. Willobye. It was they who robbed the coach between Hockliffe and Dunstable. Daniel Ellingham. Stanbridge. 1 May 1670. Went with the Constable to Th. Dogget's alehouse to arrest 3 men suspected of robbing the coach. They defended themselves against the Constable's party with pistols and a sword : Th. Clarke and Th. Bearkley were wounded. One of the 3 fled, another was taken, the 3rd was wounded and later died. Robert Cooper. Stanbridge. 1 May 1670. As D. Ellingham. The examination of John Fox of Naseley(?) Lancs, gentleman taken the 6th of Maye before Sir St. John Chernocke Bart and Thomas Snagg Esq. J.Ps This ex. sayeth that hee is one of the Dukes Troope gard and that on Sundaie last hee came from London in companie with one Mr Hongerford and one Mr. Willobye and that night they lodged att Hockliffe att a little Ale Howse there att a Widd. womans, and the next morneinge they went on the Road towards Brickhill about Nine or Tenn of the clocke, And meeting of som Carriers and a post Boye whoe discovered a Mare as Mr. Hongerford rid uppon to to bee none of his owne, And the discoverie of that Mare hindered their goeinge through Brickhill, and soe they went to a Little Ale-house about a mile from Brickhill And stayed there about too houres & afterwards they went from thence and tooke theire course towards the Hilley Contrey (and amongst the woods there) to hide themselves because they would not be seene, and there continued untill nine of the Clock in the Night, and from thence came againe to the Alehouse in Hockliffe aforesaid and there stayed upp all night and on Tuesday morneinge about eight or Nine of the clock they went through Wooburn to Braughton in the County of Bucks to the Inn there and there they bespake a Cupple of pulletts for their Dinner and stayed there too houres & feareing that their horses should be stayed left their dinner uppon the Table and went about fower Miles Windinge on the Right unto A Little Alehouse in A village as nee knoweth not and afterwards to another Alehouse in another village hee knoweth not and there stayed till eight of clocke, and from thence to the aforesd. howse att Hockliffe aforesd. and stayed there all Night untill about twelve of the clock the next date beinge Wednesdaie And then went to Fenistratford to A hill as had a Beacon uppon it, and went to an Alehouse too Miles forward in the Cuntry and stayed there untill about seaven of the clock and from thence went into the sd. Alehouse in Hockliffe and stayed there all that Night and the next morneinge being Thursday about fower or five of the clock they went unto A Smythes shopp in Hockliffe aforesd. and there had their horses shod and after went to an alehouse there over against the sd. shopp and stayed there untill about twelve of the Clock and from thence went to the place where they the sd. Mr. Hongerford and hee were taken, And hee further sayeth that as for the Robbinge of the Coach betwixt Hockliffe and Dunstable hee doth beleeve that the sd. Mr. Hongerford and the sd. Mr. Willobie were the men as robbed it and further sayeth not. The information of Daniell Ellingham of Stanbridge in the parish of Leighton Buzzard in the county aforesd., yeoman taken upon the sixt day of May 1670 before Sir St. John Chernocke Bart and Thos Snagg Esq. This informant sayeth that one James Jones of Tilsworth in the sd. County yeoman came to this Informant yesterday beinge the fifft of May and told him there were seene three persons Ridxinge through the feilds of Tilsworth aforesd. and were suspected to bee the men as Robbed the Coach which as hee heard was one King's coach as was Robbed about a fortnight since, and hee further sayeth that the men were att the howse of one Thomas Doggeatt beinge an Alehouse Whereuppon the informant went to the Constable and Informeing of the premisses the sd. Constable Required of the Informant and others of the sd. towne to Ayde and Assist him in the apprehension of these three suspected persons, they readily obayinge the Authoritie of the Constable did goe allonge with such staves and Weapons as they had in Readinesse to the place where the sd. suspected persons were, to seise uppon them uppon suspition for the Robberie aforesd, and goeinge into the Barne where their horses were in Order first to seise the horses, immediately the three suspected persons came out of the sd. Alehowse into the sd. Barne to the constable & this informant and the other of the Constables Assistants Whereuppon the sd. three suspected persons asked what was to doe there & presently without any Words drew forth their pistolls and som of them discharged too pistolls att the Constable and his Assistants and shott one Thomas Clarke through the mouth and broak his Jawbone with the sd. Shott Remaineinge within him still the other pistoll they proffered to discharge but would not goe off. Whereuppon one of the sd. three suspected persons drew his sword and afterwards hee this informant sayd that he heard one Thomas Berkley saye that hee was killed, And presently after the sd. partly, as drew his sword tooke his horse and fled and much about the time of his escape one of the sd. suspected persons was secured by the Constable and his Assistants And the other makeinge stronge Apposition with his pistolls against the Constable and his Assistants was then taken, who about too houres died And further sayeth not. The information of Robert Cooper of Stanbridge in the parish of Leighton one of the constables there, taken as aforesd. This informant sayeth that Daniell Ellingham and severall other of his Neighbours whoe Informed him being constable that there were three suspected persons att the Alehouse att one Thomas Doggett in the sd. Hamlett, and hee went with the sd. Daniell Ellingham and other of his neighbours whoe hee charged to Assist him unto the Barne of the sd. alehowse in order to the securing their horses & the sd. three suspected persons immediately came unto them sayeinge what is to doe here, and hee this informant charged his Neighbours to apprehend them uppon suspition of Robbinge A Coach about a fortnight since uppon Dunstable roade, and afterwards uppon his chargeing his Neighbours as aforesd, They the three suspected persons discharged their pistolls and Drew forth their swords and Wounded one Thos Clarke with a pistoll and Run Through Thomas Berklie witha sword And afterwards in the Scuffle one of the sd. three persons got his horse, escaped, and the other too were secured, one whereof about too houres afterwards Died, and further sayeth not.
