    Deposition: John Dier, Husborne Crawley 4 July 1670 While a shoemaker in Barnet (Herts), Roger Norris asked him to go with him to Ireland; J.D. refused, but went towards Dunstable with him. Between Markyate and Dunstable they fell out; J.D. knocked down R.N. with a crabtree cudgel. J.D. went to 'Bull', Hockliffe then to Woburn, where he was arrested. The examination of John Dier late of Husborne Crawley in the county of Beds. taken before St. John Chernocke Bart J.P. on the 4th July, 1670 This ex. saith that his last being was at Barnatt, Herts and there he remained two dayes his trade being A shooemaker he wrought at that worke dureing the time aforesd. and Roger Norris comeing to the sd. John Dier being at work at Barnatt did desire the sd. John Dier to goe along with him into the kingdome of Ireland and the sd. Roger Norris and about foure A clocke in the afternoone on Friday being the first day of this inst. July they went together out of Barnatt and went from thence to Redbourne Herts. and came thither about ten a clocke that night and there eat and dranke together and not staying there above three quarters of an houre went forward from thence to Markett Street and from thence they went together forward towards Dunstable and betweene Markett Street and Dunstable they stayed in the highway and there they fell out and beate one another and the sd. Roger Norris pursuing the sd. John Dier with blowes drave him back into the wheate lands and there the sd. John Dier confessed he knocked downe the sd. Roger Norris with a crabtree cudgill which was before sun riseing the next morning and immediately after that blow the sd. John Dier went away from the sd. Roger Norris and after the sd. John Dier was gone A little way the sd. Roger Norris appeared at the lands and againe and the sd. John Dier went from thence to Hockliffe in the county of Beds. and there stayed about an houre at the sign of the Bull in Hockliffe and from thence he came to Wooburn in the County aforesd. and before he came to Wooburn that was a man whose name he knowes not tooke the sd. John Dier upon suspition of killing the sd. Roger Norris and this examinant saith that the rasor knife and sheath and sissers and twelve shillings and six pence that were found about him was his owne and further this ex. saith not.
