Eliz. Willimott even date 1669
Sarah Mosse aged about 10, bound apprentice about 3 years ago; went away about candle light a fortnight ago. Suspects that John Riseley incited her to go.
The Examination of Eliz. Willimott the wife of Thomas Willimott of Houghton Conquest Beds. yeoman taken before Sir Geo. Blundell Kt.. Sir Clement Armiger Kt., Robt. Audley Esq., Wm Boteler Esq., John Gardner Esq., Robt. Crompton Esq., and Gaius Squire Esq. on the 21st April, 1669:
This examinant saith that Sarah Mosse a child about the age of tenn yeares was put out an apprentice to this examinants said husband by the town of Houghton Conquest aforesd. about two yeares since and that the sd. girle went away this day fortnight at night about candles light but wither she went this examinant neither knowes nor hath heard and the occasion of the sd. childs going away as this examinant believes was because the sd. child had told one John Riseley of the same towne he haveinge examind her concerninge her useage that this examinant made Grudgenge (Grudging or Grudgeon = coarse wheaten meal) bread for her and bought bakd bread for her own family which the sd. child denyed and sayd that the sd. Riseley had told her this examinant more then was true to make her have anger that in case she the sd. child was wronged he had advised her to runne away. And this examinant this day fortnight at night about candle light went into the towne to a neghbours house about business and did not stay above half a quarter of an houre but returned and not findinge the sd. child enquired of her children where the sd. girl was who told this examinant that she was newly gone out of the orchard doore and shutt it softly after her; which orchard doore leads to her neighbour Gwinnes house and this examinant goeinge out, callinge and seekinge of her came back and asked her husband (whoe was in bedd) for her and hee told her he left her at the door when he went to bedd. And this examinant saith that afterwards that same night this examinant went into the towne to her neighbours to enquire for her and could not heare of her.
