    Deposition: Judith, wife of John Darnell, Bedford, victualler 10 Feb. 1668 As to assault by Richard Flint on Samuel Lane in her house. Edwife Roffe, Bedford, miller.As above The Information of Judith the wife of Jn Darnell of St. Marie's parrish in Bedford victualler. taken upon oath Feb. 10th, 1667. This informant saith that on Tewsday last about five or six of the cloake in the afternoone Edward Roffe of Bedford, miller and Richard Flint, apprentice with John Smith of Bedford, butcher, being together in this Informants house one Samuel Lane of Bedford, Tanner, came to them in the sd. house (being above three score yeares of age) whom this informant perceived to be in drink and would not have suffered him to come into her said house but the sd. Samuel thrust her away saying hee would have a pinte of drinke and then the sd. Lane, Roffe and Flint satt downe together by the ffier side and had but one pott of beare which they dranke together and whilst they were drinking of it shee this informant went upp into an upper roome and immediately hearing A great noise below made haste downe and found the candle out and the sd. Samuel Lane very much bleeding and calling the sd. Flint a Rogue, and further saith not, saveing that before she went up she saw the sd. Flint and Lane quarrelling and the sd. Lane told the sd. Flint that he would pull his the sd. Flint's band from his necke whereupon shee this informant replyed spakinge to the sd. Lane and Flint that she hoped they would not quarrell and the sd. Flint answered No Wee are but in jest. The Information of Edward Roffe of Bedford in the county of Beds, Miller,as followeth: (taken the tenth of Feb., 1667). This informant saith that on Tewsday last aboute five or six of the clocke in the afternoone hee this informant went to Smith's Stall in the Tuesday Markett with an intente to buy some meate and finding him not at the stall went to the house of Jn Darnell in Bedford which was hard by and Jn Darnell the younger went immediately and found out the sd. Flint and brought him with some meate to this informant who whilst they were bargaining together one Samuel Lane, Tanner an aged man of the sd. towne came in to them and satt downe together near the ffier and this informant of a suddaine did perceive the sd. Lane and Flint struggling together and the sd. Lane's band torn of his neck and his face exceeding bloody and the sd. Flint thrusting the sd. Lane against the stock and this informant doth believe that what hurt was then done unto the sd. Lane was done by the sd. Flint, and this informant saith that yesterday he went to visit the sd. Lane whom hee found sicke in bed and told this informant that he the sd. Lane did declare upon the word of a dying man that the sd. Flint was the cause of his the sd. Lane's death by the blowes which he had received from the sd. Flint, wishing him this informant to goe to a Justice of the Peace and to testifie the truth of what he did know concerning the same and further saith not. (He is since run away for Debt).
