    Extracted by Thomas Veasey of Baldock. (I) Lease and release dated 1st & 2nd Feb 1804. Parties: (1) Edmund Whitehead of Stotfold. (2) John Bates of Baldock, Hertfordshire, cordwainer. (3) John Kitchiner of Ashwell, Herts, farmer and Thomas Davies of Arlesey, Beds, farmer (executors of the will of John Brown, deceased, Stotfold, farmer. (4) James Ind of Baldock, brewer. (5) Elias Eastway of Weston, Herts, carpenter and wireweaver. (6) Robert Gooch of Baldock, Herts, gentleman. Reciting: - Indenture dated 23rd Oct 1780 between James Burton, Stotfold, baker and Edmund Payne the elder, Stotfold, farmer whereby (a) was vested in (3) for 500 years as trustee. - Indenture dated 5th Apr 1788 between James Burton and John Payne, farmer and malster whereby (a) was vested in (4) for 1000 years as trustee. Operative: - In consideration of £210 (1) conveys (a) to (2). - (3) and (4) assign residue of said terms to (5) and (6) in trust for (2). Property: (a) Close and pasture land of 3 ½ a with appurtenances in Stotfold formerly in the occupation of James Burton, then (1) then William Ramsdon his under tenant. Bounded on E by orchard of James Bates then in the occupation of William Ramsdon; W by a common field; N by the common highway leading up from Stotfold Green and S by the inclosed land of Isaac Hindly then in the occupation of John Payne. Habendum: - To the use (2) forever. (II) Mortgage dated 11th Jul 1855. Parties: (1) John Bates, late of Willian, Herts, publican but then of 2 All Saints Place, Caldonian Road, London, Middlesex, yeoman. (2) John Smyth of Stevenage, Herts, gentleman. Operative: - Mortgage from (1) to (2) for £100 and interest at £5 per centum per annum. (1) conveys (a) to (2) as security for repayment. Property: (a) Same property as described at (I) however, the close has since been in the occupation of George Oliver and the common field on the W has since been divided into several allotments under the Stotfold inclosure award. Habendum: - To the use of (2) subject to the usual mortgage provisos for redemption. Covenants: - (1) has power of sale if default in payment. (III) Will of John Bates dated 6th Mar 1857 whereby all estates were bequeathed to his late wife's great niece Eliza, the wife of Henry Stevens; after her decease to Henry; when both decease to whoever they appoint by deed or will; in default of such appointment to be divided between any of their children. John Bates died on the 3rd Jun 1857 and his will was proved by Henry & Eliza Stevens at the prerogative court of Canterbury on the 24th Jun 1857. (IV) Transfer of mortgage dated 11th Jul 1855. Parties: (1) John Smyth. (2) Thomas Veasey of Baldock, Herts, gentleman. Operative: - In consideration of £100 (1) transfers his position as mortgagee to (2). (V) Conveyance dated 29th Sep 1859 Parties: (1) Henry Stevens late of All Saints Place, Caledonian Road, Middlesex but then of 20 Mabledon Place, Burton Crescent, Middlesex, builder and wife Eliza. (2) Thomas Veasey. (3) John Galer of Stotfold. Reciting: - (1) at direction of (2) contracted the sale of (a-b) to (3) for £500. - £100 mortgage money secured on (a) is owed to (2). - £250 mortgage money secured on (b) is owed to (2). - Two principal sums together of £350 should be paid to (2) out of the purchase money. Operative: - In consideration of £500 (£350 to (2)) (1) conveys (a-b) to (3). Property: (a) Same property as at recital I with a much different description... Close and pasture of 3 ½ a in Stotfold formerly used as two closes; one contained 1a 10p (numbered 111 on the Stotfold Tithe Map) and the other 2a 20p. The said closes were formerly in the occupation of Edmund Whitehead then William Ramsdon and are bounded on W and NW by Astwick Road (leading from the Baldock and Shefford Road to the recreation ground) and by inclosed land of Isaac Hindley and then Mrs. Wilkinson on the other side. (b) Messuage or dwellinghouse at Green End, Stotfold opposite the recreation ground and then used as a beer house called 'the Cricketeers' containing 2r 20p (numbered 112 on the Stotfold Tithe Map). Has been in the occupation of John Galer in the past. Covenants: - No widow of (3) to dower out of (a-b). (VI) Mortgage dated 30th Sep 1859. Parties: (1) John Galer (2) Thomas Veasey Operative: - Mortgage from (1) to (2) for £400 at £5 per cent per annum. (1) conveys (a) to (2) as security for repayment. Property: Property (a) at recital (V). Habendum: - To the use of (2) subject to usual mortgage provisos for redemption. (VII) Will of John Galer, deceased late of Stotfold, shopkeeper and beerseller dated 22nd Dec 1862: - Appointing Thomas Hine of Baldock, herts, draper & grocer and David Waldock of Stotfold, miller to be trustees and executors. - Giving all estates to trustees upon trust that they sell off property and disperse with proceeds as explained in the will. - Subject to paying off debts including £80 due on bond to his son Thomas Galer. (VIII) Codicil to above will dated 19th Jul 1870 whereby the appointment of David Waldock as trustee was revoked and his wife Sarah Galer and Allen Flitten of Radwell Mill were duly appointed with the same powers. (IX) John Galer died on the 8th Feb 1872 and his will was proved.
