  • Title
Breviat of bill exhibited at the Star Chamber by Hen., Earl of Kent, plt. N. does not cooperate with other J.P.s but is a supporter of evil & disordered persons and caused trouble between Lord Cheney and Lord St. John of Bletsoe. Although a burgess of Parliament 18 Eliz. he refused to be a commissioner for the subsidy then granted until he was allowed to choose his area. He then reduced Jas. Easte's assessment, undervalued his home town of Haynes, and increased others without just cause. Upon complaint being made to the Earl of Kent, the latter suggested to Lord Cheney certain modifications, whereupon N. complained to the Earl of Bedford. Ten years previously he had concealed a felony: when Thos. Smythe, Agnes Johnson & Jn. Wryghte stole 2 porklings of Jn. Goodye of Hawnes. He attempted to override the Earl of Kent: when Robt. Pinchmore was arrested on suspicion of burglary at the house of Thos. Thrale of Haynes, Kent & Thos. Pygott esq. J.P. delivered Pinchmore to the constable of Hawnes for delivery to Bedford gaol, N. took away the warrant from the constables and set Pynchmore free. He tampered with the examination of Morgayne Evans and took Pynchmore out of Bedford gaol. When Morgan Evans contrived the escape of Wm. Grymston al. Wheler, a notable thief, from Bedford gaol, he allowed Morgan - then in his service - to escape. The previous Christmas, when Robt. Assheton of Hawnes was robbed of a purse, knife & 19d. by Ric. Nixson of Haynes and his w. & Jn. Lucas of Haynes, N. took no action but bound Assheton over. The previous Lent Thos. Pearcyvall was going from Haynes to Chicksands, and was beaten by Ellis ap Reese (Rhys) al. Pryce, servt. to N., and only saved from death by the appearance of 2 poor women, but N. has taken no action. (Lord Chesiney d. 1587)
