Petition as handed by Chas. Grey to Jas. I.:- 'Most high & excellent sovereign, vouchsafe I beseech you the view of these few lines. That right noble progenitor of yours, King Henry VII, partly for security of a debt due unto him by an unthrifty uncle of mine, Richard, Earl of Kent, but more especially of a princely provision by that king (lest all the possessions of such ancient earl- dom should be wasted by a careless owner) took assurances from the said Earl of the inheritance of the manors of Ruthyn al. Dyffryn Dlwydd in Wales (being the ancient barony of that earldom) and of divers other lands & possessions of the sd. Richard to a great value, much whereof remaineth yet in your Majesty's hands; the due debt not exceeding 1,800, which long sice was satisfied.' The chief manors were aftwds. confirmed by other ancestors to Henry VIII against promise of recompense elsewhere, never received. Begs that enquiry be made especially as regards Ruthyn and Dyffryn Clwydd, now reverted to crown by d. of late Countess of Warwick, also Brampton & Hemingford Grey. 3 copies & cover.
