Title
Answer of Sarah Brace, wid. to bill of Thos. Lawrence;
recites release of actions 1 June 1671; states that
certain tithes including hay were to her knowledge
paid; she has no knowledge of a custom of tithes of
wood, but a smoke penny is paid the rector at Easter;
tithe is paid on wood of less than 20 yrs. growth when cut, but
no such wood was cut by Dan. Brace of herself in 1670, 1671,
or 1672; Dan. Brace had 11 calves of which he sold 10,
paying Thos. Lawrence 10s.; the 11th he killed for his
own use and gave the rector a shoulder; he had no pigs;
he had 64 lambs, on which, according to custom he offered
to pay 16s., (3d. a lamb), but Thos. Lawrence would not
accept it; all other small tithes were paid, i.e. pigeons
when any were drawn and taken out of the dovehouse;
eggs at Easter (2 per hen and 3 per cock), but he had
no turkeys or ducks; as she was to quit at Michaelmas
1672 she sold the grain uncut in June; (last page much
corrected and obscure).
