    Statement (duplicated) of the purchase conveyances to Anth., Earl of Kent, and Hen., Earl (aft. Duke) of Kent, of portions, together constituting the whole, of the messuage, stables and premises in St. James' Sqare now the property of Thos. Phil. Weddell, Earl de Grey:- 31 Jan., 1 Feb., 1677/8: 6,600; Sir Jn.Moore & Nich.Barbon: a piece of ground, part of the E. side of the great square place in St. James' Field, otherwise Pall Mall Field, 52' wide x 195' deep, lying between the intended piazza W., and ground of the Earl of St. Albans parcel of the sd. field E.; whereupon Nich. Barbon hath built a great messuage or mansion house; and 3 pieces of ground in a place called the East Stable yard; ground rent 28 12s.8d. to Baptist May esq.; 13,14 July 1682: 10; from Hen., Earl of Clarendon; a piece 40 x 23' in the East Stable yard; rent 6; 1,2 March 1702: 184: Wm. Stanton; a piece 32 x 23' next the Stable yard; rent 4 16s. 1 May 1730: 1,064: ground rents totalling 39 8s.8d. 'It appears that the ground now forming the site of St. James' Square was formerly vested in the crown' and was granted by letters patent 1 April 1665 to Baptist May and Abe. Cowley for 80 p.a. This rent was by Act of Parliament vested in trustees for sale, who conveyed it 28 June 1710 to Edm. Poley and Thos. Tolkes in trust to attend the inheritance.
