Admission of Robert Barnby of Baldock, Herts, surgeon, on surrender of John Smith, elder, Stotfold, yeoman of - 1a arable in common fields to which John Smith was admitted tenant on 16 May 1768 on surrender of Edward Taylor Immediately afterwards said Robert Barneby surrendered said land to use of James Bates of Willian, Herts, and wife, Mary, and then to son, John Bates Will of John Bates of 2 September 1814 (proved Hitchin 14 May 1823) by which he devised real estate to son John Enclosure Award of Stotfold dated 26 August 1851 by which 239b, 252a and 239a were awarded to John Bates in lieu of open field land Grant and Release of 6 March 1857 i) John Bates ii) Edward Fryer, Hitchin, Herts, liquor merchant Consideration - 250 lent by ii) to i) i) granted and released to ii) - The Cricketers beerhouse opposite the Recreation Ground - 2a 30p ground To secure repayment of 250 and interest at 5% p.a. Also i) covenanted with ii) to surrender into hands of Lords of respective manors - (Manor of Stotfold) no 239a (3a 1r 30p) - (Rectory Manor of Stotfold) no 239b (2r) Surrender of 6 March 1857 Will of John Bates of 6 March 1857 ...to Eliza, wife of Henry Stevens (his late wife's great niece) - All his estate after her death to go to her husband and then to her children as tenants in common He died on 3 June 1857. Will proved (PCC) on 24 June 1857 Assignment of 23 June 1858 (endorsed on deed of 6 March 1857) i) Edward Fryer ii) Thomas Veasey, Baldock, Herts, gentleman On 25 May last ii) paid 259 1s 6d to i) in satisfaction of said principal sum and interest now i) grants to ii) - Said freehold premises with full benefit of power of sale but subject to equity of redemption Succession duty account of Eliza Stevens of 20 August 1858
