  • Scope and Content
The Acts mainly concerned are 22 and 23 Chas II c 25 (1670) which empowered Lords of Manors to appoint gamekeepers, and 9 Anne c 27 (1710) by which only one keeper was allowed for any one manor at one time. The names were to be entered with the Clerk of the Peace. By an act of 25 Geo III, c 50 (1785), every gamekeeper had to take out a certificate annually, and by Act of 1 and 2 William IV c 32 (1831) every person who took out an annual game licence was allowed to kill game. NOTE: There are a few earlier deputations in QSM (eg. 4 p.6) There is an original deed of appointment of gamekeeper for the Manor of Aspley Guise, 1748, in HW37. Also a similar deed for Studham, 1849, in BW93.
