Letter Reads- Lord Dacre's notions of what relative prices of wheat and barley ought to be. Bennett argues that what ought to be and what have been very different. Tradition that when 8/- a bushel, Barley would be 5/-, yet vary, prices have been more like 7/- and 3/9. If wheat gone down 1/8 or to 7/- then relatively barley goes down from 5/- to 4/4. Feels in own experience if wheat is at 7/6 the relative value of barley be 4/-. Has found that more farmers left the Corn Law meeting expressly to avoid the division than he had at first anticipated. Their feelings are that however much dislike Cobden and free trade know latter is fast approaching, would rather know worst at once. Has seen Mr. Chalk. Paine the tenant and he do not get on - Bennett bargain with Paine for one year - Mr.Chalk quite agreeable to this. Seven acres of land for sale at Lidlington - of no great advantage to Duke where so much in village and parish belongs to him.
