Letter Reads- Harpur committee to see me about proposed sale of Duke's land near. Offa St. They said if Duke would lay out his building gd. in a line with their street (Harpur) they would pull down 3 almhouses to continue; I said I'd consult you. Bennett's comments on above; thinks the new Harpur St. should be as wide as Dame Alice.; pull down 5 almshouse. Bennett also wanted small piece of land. Thinks this plan will fetch 800-1,000 more than without the thoroughfare. Is glad the quarrelsome people of Bedford have one subject (town improvement) at which they can look with unprejudiced eyes. No politics, (2/3 of trustees being opposed to Duke): gentlemen who met me were T.A. Green, Capt.Leech, Nash, (for or per Small?), S.Bailey, clerk. The deputation also said they might be purchasers. Think we must postpone sale for week or two. Letter from Wing about it. Saw Duke; Oakley mill again.
