The house (189 Old Bedford Road) was built to Arts & Crafts aesthetic by W R Steel. The oak framing and joinery to the ground floor were of excellent quality, although Mrs Steel later suggested that economies were made on the first floor where softwood (stained to look like oak) was used. The builder was S W Johnson with heating and hot water by Frank Moody. John Manning made alterations to the house after W R Steel's death in 1983 to make it more convenient for Mrs Steel.
