Bill of Complaint by Charles Nicholls, gent of Hitchin, to William Lord Cowper, Baron of Wingham, Lord High Chancellor of Gt Britain, that Batalion Shotbolt, gent, a customary tenant of the Manor of Almeshoebury, Herts, and Thomas Plumbe, borrowed from him 170 on the inheritance of a messuage, free from incumbrances, and on 14 November 1706 surrendered into the hands of the Steward, George Draper : - a customary messuage in Offley, Herts with about 3 ac in 2 closes of pasture adjoining, and 14 ac arable belonging to the messuage and dispersed in the fields of Offley, then occ by said Thomas Plumbe or his undertenants, with all houses, barns, stables etc. Thomas Plumbe and Batalion Shotbolt, with William Lucas and various others, are now trying to cheat Charles Nicholls out of the money lent and are claiming title to the premises in law or equity, especially William Lucas. Charles Nicholls cannot dispose of the premises unless they are freed of the equity of redemption and the "confederates" release their interest. If they refuse to pay, he is without remedy by the strict rules of common law but properly relievable by the equity & justice of this court. CN asks for a subpoena from the Court of Chancery directed at BS, TP, WL and others commanding them to appear personally to set out their claim and abide by the court's decision. Signed: R Edwardes [orator]
