Highway Scheme Plans: M1 London-Yorkshire Motorway
The Luton-Watford Gap (Northamptonshire) - Dunchurch (Warwickshire) scheme was the first section of motorway to be confirmed by the Ministry of Transport in October 1956. Constuction began in March 1958, John Laing & Sons Ltd, being the contractors for the Bedfordshire Section. A 14 mile section from the St. Albans Bypass to Husborne Crawley was opened on the 2nd November 1958 and was initially maintained by Bedfordshire County Council through an Agency Agreement with the Ministry of Transport.
