    According to J.D. Sainsbury in his 'A Guide to the History of the Bedfordshire and Hertfordshire Regiment', p15, the 1st and 2nd Volunteer Battalions were raised in the Volunteer Training Corps as the 1st and 2nd Battalions The Bedfordshire Volunteer Regiment, with battalion headquarters at Bedford and Luton respectively. Accepted for service in the Volunteer Force under the same designations: 1st Battalion July 1916 (A.O. 206/1916); 2nd Battalion November 1916. Redesignated 1st and 2nd Volunteer Battalions The Bedfordshire Regiment July 1918. Volunteers from the two battalions formed No 16 (Bedfordshire) Volunteer Special Service Company and served in coast defences at Hunstanton, Norfolk July - September 1918. Disbandment promulgated October 1920.
